Park-Lane, McCoy Pick Up Women's Players of the Week
NEW YORK (March 2, 2021) ---
Lauren Park-Lane of Seton Hall in Division I and
Shannon McCoy of Kean in Divisions II/III have been named Women’s Players of the Week by the Met Basketball Writers Association.
The designations, for games played Feb. 22-28, are unique in that they encompass players from 72 Met area schools across Divisions I, II and III. At the outset of this season, the MBWA selected one overall Women’s Player of the Week. With all divisions now playing games, the association has reinstituted naming awards in Division I and in Divisions II/III.
A 5-6 sophomore guard from Wilmington, DE, Park-Lane averaged a team-best 18.5 points and 10.0 assists on the road last week as the Pirates (14-6) defeated Xavier 108-65 and Villanova 67-55 in Big East Conference action.
On Wednesday at Xavier, Park-Lane recorded her first career double-double, scoring 17 points and setting a new Seton Hall single-game record with 15 assists. She only turned the ball over three times.
Then, on Saturday at Villanova, Park-Lane finished with 20 points to go with five assists. With the game tied at 31-31 in the third quarter, Seton Hall went on a 9-0 run, capped by a 3-point play from Park-Lane, that established a 40-31 advantage for the Pirates.
A 5-10 junior guard from Barnegat, NJ, McCoy --- who also was named the New Jersey Athletic Conference player of the week --- averaged 24.0 points and 7.5 rebounds in leading the Cougars (2-6) to their first two victories of the season in a home-and-home series against Rutgers-Newark.
McCoy registered a double-double of 24 points and 10 rebounds, and added four blocks, in Kean’s 87-48 homecourt triumph. She next had 24 points again, augmented by five rebounds and three assists, in a 91-69 win on the road.
