St. John's Champagnie Selected as Met Men's Player of the Week
NEW YORK (Feb. 2, 2021) ---
Julian Champagnie of St. John's for the second time this season has been named Men’s Player of the Week by the Met Basketball Writers Assn. for the second time this season.
The designation, for games played Jan. 25-31, is unique in that it encompass players from 72 Met area schools across Divisions I, II and III. This season, however, many schools are not playing basketball or have delayed seasonal starts due to the coronavirus situation, and for this week nominations were only received from Division I and Division II programs.
This is the third straight week in which the MBWA designation has gone to a men’s player from St. John’s. Champagnie was previously honored Jan. 19 and Posh Alexander won the accolade last week.
A 6-8 sophomore guard-forward from Brooklyn, NY, Champagnie helped lead the Red Storm (11-7) to road victories at DePaul and Marquette. He averaged a team-high 19.0 points in the two games along with 6.5 rebounds and 3.5 3-pointers while shooting 58.3% (7-of-12) from distance.
Champagnie started the week on Wednesday with a 16-point, six-rebound performance in an 81-68 triumph over DePaul, connecting on 3-of-5 from beyond the arc.
He closed the week on Sunday by scoring a game-high 22 points on 7-of 14 shooting from the field --- including 4-of-7 from 3-point range --- in a 75-73 edge of Marquette. Champagnie also pulled down seven rebounds in the game.
Players receiving MBWA Honorable Mention for the week: Posh Alexander, St. John’s; Jalen Burgess, Dominican; Abdallah Elsaleh, Bloomfield; Mouhamadou Gueye, Stony Brook; Jahlil Jenkins, Fairleigh Dickinson; Isaac Kante, Hofstra; Samir Stewart, Manhattan.
