St. John's Champagnie Selected as Met Men's Player of the Week
NEW YORK (Jan. 19, 2021) ---
Julian Champagnie of St. John's has been named Men’s Player of the Week by the Met Basketball Writers Assn.
The designation, for games played Jan. 11-17, is unique in that it encompass players from 72 Met area schools across Divisions I, II and III. This season, however, many schools are not playing basketball or have delayed seasonal starts due to the coronavirus situation, and for this week nominations were only received from Division I programs.
A 6-8 sophomore guard-forward from Brooklyn, NY, Champagnie --- who also was named the Big East Conference player of the week --- averaged 19.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.0 steals and 1.5 blocks in a 1-1 week for the Red Storm (8-7) while shooting 47.4% (9-of-19) from 3-point range.
On Tuesday in a 69-57 win at home over Butler, Champagnie scored 18 points on 6-of-12 shooting from behind the arc, and added five rebounds, two blocks and two steals. On Saturday in a 73-71 loss to visiting Marquette, Champagnie registered 20 points. He scored 15 points in a stretch of three minutes, including a personal 12-0 run that turned a 10-point St. John’s deficit into a two-point edge.
Entering the week, Champagnie led the Big East in scoring (20.7 ppg, 28th nationally) and free throw percentage (88.0%). He also ranked among the conference’s top 10 in a number of other categories, including rebounds per game (7.3, 9th), steals per game (1.8, 5th) and blocks per game (1.2, 9th).
Players receiving MBWA Honorable Mention for the week: Elijah Buchanan, Manhattan; Alex Morales, Wagner; Jalen Ray, Hofstra.
Previous MBWA 2020-21 Men’s Players of the Week: Jan. 12, Tyler Thomas, Sacred Heart.
