Sacred Heart's Thomas Named MBB Player of the Week
NEW YORK (Jan. 12, 2021) ---
Tyler Thomas of Sacred Heart has been named Men’s Player of the Week by the Met Basketball Writers Assn.
The designation, for games played Jan. 4-10, is unique in that it encompass players from 72 Met area schools across Divisions I, II and III. This season, however, many schools are not playing basketball or have delayed seasonal starts due to the coronavirus situation, and for this week nominations were only received from Division I programs.
A 6-3 sophomore guard from Amity, CT, Thomas --- who also was named the Northeast Conference player of the week --- averaged 29 points, seven rebounds and four assists for the Pioneers (3-4) in a 1-1 split last week at Merrimack. He scored a career-high 36 points, highest in the NEC this season and 15th best in the NCAA, in a 97-90 OT loss, then came back to register a game-high 22 points in a 68-62 Sacred Heart victory.
With his output last week, Thomas moved up to No. 2 in scoring in the NEC at 19.8 ppg (42nd nationally) and stands second in the conference and 14th in the nation with 3.33 3-pointers per game.
Players receiving MBWA Honorable Mention for the week: Chris Austin, Fordham; Ty Flowers, LIU; Jared Rhoden, Seton Hall; Warren Williams, Manhattan.
