NEW YORK (Feb. 5, 2019) ---
Myles Powell of Seton Hall, for the second time this season in Division I, and
Brandon Jacobs, of Pace and
Alan McDonald of Old Westbury as co-winners in Divisions II-III, have been named Men’s Players of the Week by the Met Basketball Writers Assn.
The MBWA designations, for games played Jan. 28-Feb. 3, are unique in that they encompass players from 73 Met area schools across Divisions I, II and III.
A 6-2 junior guard from Trenton, NJ, Powell --- who was previously presented with the MBWA’s weekly award on Dec. 11 --- averaged 26.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 3.0 steals in a 1-1 week for the Pirates (13-9), who were involved in a pair of two-point games.
Powell notched his fourth 30-plus points game of the season in a Wednesday 65-63 win at home over Providence in which he produced 31 points on 12-of-23 shooting. His dunk with 1:47 to go in the game was a key part of a late run that propelled Seton Hall past the Friars.
Powell next posted his 13th 20-plus points output of the season with 21 points as the Pirates fell 70-68 at Butler. He led a 20-3 late second half rally to get the Pirates tied, contributing a steal and three-point play plus a 3-point field goal in back-to-back possessions.
Powell is averaging 21.6 points per game this season, second-best in the Big East Conference and No. 20 nationally in Division I.
A 6-0 sophomore guard from Cambria Heights, NY, Jacobs --- who also was named the Northeast 10 Conference player of the week --- not only scores for the Setters but also dishes out the assists. He recorded back-to-back double-doubles (points/assists) in a pair of wins last week for Pace (14-8), averaging 17.0 points, 11.0 assists and 6.0 rebounds.
He began with 18 points, 12 assists and six rebounds in a 79-68 homecourt victory over Stonehill, then recorded 16 points, 10 assists and six rebounds in a 76-74 overtime triumph at Bentley. Averaging 6.1 assists per game, Jacobs is tied for 18th best nationally in Division II.
