Johnson, Warren Named WBB Players of the Week
NEW YORK (Jan. 22, 2019) --
Stella Johnson of Rider in Division I for the second time this season and
Davida Warren of Old Westbury in Divisions II-III have been named Women’s Players of the Week by the Met Basketball Writers Assn.
The MBWA designations, for games played Jan. 14-20, are unique in that they encompass players from 73 Met area schools across Divisions I, II and III.
A 5-10 junior guard from Denville, NJ, Johnson --- who also was named Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference player of the week and previously was honored by the MBWA on Jan. 8 --- averaged 20.0 points and 6.3 rebounds to lead Rider (10-7) to three conference victories last week. She connected on 56.8% of her shots from the field (21-of-37) and 55.6% from 3-point range (10-of-19) as the MAAC co-leading Broncs (6-0) surged to their best start ever in league play.
Johnson posted 29 points on 10-of-15 shooting from the floor and 5-of-7 from beyond the arc to go with seven rebounds in a 66-58 road win over Iona. She produced an all-around nine points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals in a 60-38 homecourt win over St. Peter’s. Johnson closed the week with 22 points, six rebounds, seven assists and two steals in a 73-63 triumph at Manhattan, shooting 7-of-13 from floor, including 4-of-7 from 3-point range.
A 6-0 junior center from Brooklyn, NY, Warren --- who also was named Skyline Conference player of the week --- averaged 22.0 points and 18.0 rebounds in an 80-56 road victory over Purchase and a 79-39 homecourt rout of Baruch.
Warren registered a career-best 28 points on 14-of-19 shooting to go along with 17 rebounds and a pair of blocks against Purchase. She followed with 16 points and 19 rebounds for her 12th career double-double (eighth of the season) against Baruch.
