Ponds Snares 3rd in Row, Reyes a 3-peater for MBB Weekly Honor

NEW YORK (Feb. 20, 2018) --- Shamorie Ponds of St. John’s in Division I, for the second week in a row, and  and Justin Reyes of St. Thomas Aquinas  for Division II-III have been named Men’s Players of the Week by the Met Basketball Writers Assn.
  
The designations, for games played Feb. 12-18, are unique in that they encompass players from 74 Met area schools across Divisions I, II and III.
 
The MBWA weekly selection for Reyes is his third of the season, having previously been honored on Jan. 23 and Jan. 30.
 
A 6-1 sophomore guard from Brooklyn, NY, Ponds led the Red Storm (14-13) to their fourth consecutive victory in their only game of the week, a 77-76 clipping of DePaul in Chicago. He poured in 26 points and produced a career-high 10 assists, shooting 10-of-18 from the field and 4-of-8 from beyond the arc. Ponds also grabbed five rebounds and made two steals in the Johnnies’ second Big East road win in their last three games. He stepped up in the final two minutes by scoring six points during a 10-2 run that put SJU on top.
 
A 6-4 senior guard-forward from Haverhill, MA, Reyes averaged a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds as the Spartans (23-6) won two games last week, defeating NYIT at home 97-74 and winning 77-64 at LIU Post. He shot 70% (14-of-20) from the floor.
 
Reyes scored 19 points on 7-of-8 shooting and had nine rebounds in just 18 minutes of action against NYIT. In the game against LIU Post, he had 17 points, 11 rebounds, three steals and a block.
