Delgado, Toney Named Weekly MBB Award Winners

NEW YORK (Dec. 19, 2017) --- Angel Delgado of Seton Hall in Division I, and Sam Toney of New Jersey City in Divisions II-III, have been named Men’s Players of the Week by the Met Basketball Writers Assn.

The designations, for games played Jan. 1-7, are unique in that they encompass players from 74 Met area schools across Divisions I, II and III.

A 6-10 senior center from the Dominican Republic, Delgado posted a career-high 28 points along with 15 rebounds and six assists as the nationally-ranked No. 13 Pirates (14-2), in their only game of the week, secured a 90-87 Big East win on the road at Butler. The defeat was the first for the Bulldogs at home in Hinkle Fieldhouse this season.

For the game, Delgado shot 9-of-15 from the field and 10-of-12 at the free throw line. He poured in 18 of his 28 points in the first half, which represented half of Seton Hall’s output prior to intermission. Four of his six assists turned into three-pointers, and the Pirates scored 16 total points off his assists. The double-double was Delgado’s 12th of the season and NCAA-leading 62nd of his career.

A 6-4 sophomore forward from Plainfield, NJ, Toney --- who also was named NJAC player of the week --- averaged 28.0 points on 54.3% shooting (19-of-35) and 8.0 rebounds as the Gothic Knights (11-2) lost at home 76-66 to conference-rival Montclair State and defeated Rowan on the road 79-76. He shot 42.9% (6-of-14) from 3-point range and 85.7% (12-of-14) at the free throw line.

Toney produced a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds in the game against Montclair. Next he registered his second 36-point performance of the season as NJCU overcame a 20-point first-half deficit to beat Rowan. Toney scored 14 of the Gothic Knights final 21 points as the team rallied from 12 points behind with 5:39 left in the game.

The 36-point effort was the fourth time this season Toney has surpassed 30 points and the 29th time in 42 career games he has tallied in double figures.
