Gilmer, Iavarone Get Women's Basketball Players of the Week
NEW YORK (Jan. 30, 2018) ---
Alana Gilmer of Marist in Division I and
Andrea Iavarone of St. Joseph’s-Long Island in Divisions II-III have been named Women’s Players of the Week by the Met Basketball Writers Assn.
The designations, for games played Jan. 22-28, are unique in that they encompass players from 74 Met area schools across Divisions I, II and III.
A 6-0 sophomore forward from North Easton, MA, Gilmer --- who also was named Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference player of the week --- averaged 20.7 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.7 assists in a 3-0 MAAC week on the road for the Red Foxes (12-10). She shot 60% (24-of-40) from the field, 60% (3-of-5) from 3-point territory and 91.7% (11-of-12) at the free throw line.
Gilmer started the week with an all-around 14 points, five rebounds, three assists, three blocked shots and one steal in an 86-53 victory at St. Peter’s, then followed with her seventh and eighth 20-plus point performances in a successful Western New York swing. She registered 21 points and five assists in an 84-78 win at Niagara, then concluded with a career-high equaling 27 points on 10-of-11 shooting, along with seven rebounds, in a 78-53 triumph at Canisius.
A 6-0 senior forward from Miller Place, NY, Iavarone --- who also was named Skyline Conference player of the week --- averaged a double-double of 34.5 points and 26.0 rebounds as the Golden Eagles (6-10) defeated Farmingdale State 83-69 and toppled Purchase 74-71 last week. She shot 62.5% (25-of-40) overall from the field.
Iavarone erupted for 37 points and a St. Joseph’s single-game record of 27 rebounds against Farmingdale, then followed with 32 points on 11-of-14 shooting from the field and a perfect 10-of-10 at the free throw line, along with 25 rebounds and six blocks, in the win over Purchase.
