Delgado, Wright-Foreman, Bonacum Claim MBB Weekly Awards
NEW YORK (Feb. 28, 2017) ---
Angel Delgado of Seton Hall and
Justin Wright-Foreman of Hofstra, as co-winners in Division I, and
Thomas Bonacum of Ramapo in Divisions II-III have been named Men’s Players of the Week, respectively, by the Met Basketball Writers Assn.
The designations, for games played Feb. 20-26, are unique in that they encompass players from 74 Met area schools across Divisions I, II and III.
This was the third Met Player of the Week selection for Angel Delgado, and the second each for Wright-Foreman and Bonacum. Delgado was previously tabbed on Dec. 20 and Feb. 7; Wright-Foreman on Feb. 14; and Bonacum on Dec. 6.
A 6-10 junior forward from the Dominican Republic, Delgado --- the nation’s leader in rebounding (13.0 rpg) and double-doubles (23) this season --- averaged 20.5 points and 11.5 rebounds while shooting 60% (15-of-25) from the field in a 2-0 week for Seton Hall (18-10).
In a 71-64 home win over Xavier, Delgado delivered 25 points on 10-of-17 shooting and 13 rebounds. He recorded two three-point plays in the second half, including one that gave the Pirates the lead for good and answered a Musketeers 3-point shot on the previous possession.
Then, in an 82-79 road win at DePaul, Delgado posted 16 points on 5-of-8 shooting along with 10 rebounds for his 10th consecutive double-double and 21st in the last 22 games. During the 10-game double-double streak, Delgado is averaging 18.1 points and 14.9 rebounds.
Delgado, who is closing in on becoming the Big East’s all-time single-season leader in rebounding, is 13 caroms away from becoming just the fifth Pirate to register 1,000 career points and 1,000 rebounds.
A 6-foot sophomore guard from Queens, NY, Wright-Foreman led the Pride to two important road wins to end the regular season, 96-82 over William & Mary and 71-66 over James Madison. He averaged 27 points, 5.5 rebounds and two assists per game in a 2-0 week for Hofstra (15-16).
Wright-Foreman started with a 35-point career-high outburst at William & Mary. He fell one 3-pointer shy of the school single-game record by draining seven treys, and was 11-of-21 overall in shooting from the field. His 35 points were the most for a Pride player since Zeke Upshaw had 37 at Richmond in 2013.
In the close win over James Madison, Wright-Foreman had a team-high 19 points along with five rebounds and two assists as Hofstra won for the third time in its last five games. He has scored in double figures now in 21 straight games.
A 6-6 junior forward from Fanwood, NJ, Bonacum propelled the Roadrunners (25-2) in a 2-0 week to the NJAC championship with a sensational half-court buzzer-beater that netted a 67-64 victory over NJCU. He finished with 20 points, nine rebounds and four assists in the final game.
Previously in the semifinals, Bonacum posted a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds in a 110-101 win over Rowan.
