NEW YORK (Feb. 14, 2017) ---
Roland Nyama of Stony Brook and
Justin Wright-Foreman of Hofstra, as co-winners in Division I, and
Frank Schettino of Staten Island in Divisions II-III, have been named Men’s Players of the Week, respectively, by the Met Basketball Writers Assn.
The designations, for games played Feb. 6-12, are unique in that they encompass players from 74 Met area schools across Divisions I, II and III.
The MBWA selection is the third this season for Schettino, who previously was named Met Division II-III Player of the Week on Jan. 10 and Jan. 24.
A 6-6 junior guard/forward from Frankfurt, Germany, Nyama --- who also was named America East conference player of the week --- averaged 22.5 points and 4.5 rebounds, and shot 60% from the field (15-of-25), in a 2-0 week for the Seawolves (15-10).
Nyama tallied a career-high 26 points and had seven rebounds in a 67-66 win over Maine, hitting the game-winning free throw with one second remaining. He scored 19 points in an 83-72 triumph over UMass Lowell as Stony Brook has now won four in a row.
A 6-0 sophomore guard from Queens, NY, Wright-Foreman --- who also was named Colonial Athletic Association player of the week --- averaged 27 points on 17-of-34 shooting from the field (50%) and also six rebounds in a 1-1 week on the road for the Pride (13-14).
Wright-Foreman started with a game-high 29 points in a 69-65 loss at Towson, where he also had seven rebounds and four assists while draining five three-pointers. Next he posted 25 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field in a 74-64 victory at Northeastern to help Hofstra to its third win in its last four games.
A 5-11 senior guard from Staten Island, NY, Schettino recorded back-to-back triple doubles as the Dolphins (19-6) concluded an unbeaten (16-0) CUNYAC regular season with an 86-62 triumph over Brooklyn and a 78-76 win over Lehman to secure the No. 1 seed in the upcoming conference tournament.
Schettino registered 14 assists, 14 points on 5-of-11 shooting and 10 rebounds in the game against Brooklyn, then followed with 32 points on 10-of-20 shooting, plus 12 assists and 10 more rebounds in the narrow win over Lehman.
